Surge in use of 360-degree feedback for appraisal

New report shows 25% of companies use 360 for performance management

London, 18 July 2011 - A new original HR insight paper, published by leading HR consultancy ETS, highlights the rapidly increasing use of 360-degree feedback in appraisals. Research of senior HR professionals representing 2.3m private-sector employees shows that a quarter of medium and large companies are already using 360 for performance management and this figure continues to rise.

360-degree feedback for appraisal explores this trend in greater detail, looking at the reasons why corporate organisations are increasingly turning to 360-degree feedback to assess employees. The report includes case study examples, including one from the Royal Bank of Scotland, who explain how implementing 360-degree feedback as part of the performance appraisal process has benefitted the business.

Roger Farley, Performance & Organisational Development Manager at RBS, comments:

360 feedback has become an integral part of the performance management approach for senior leaders at RBS. Individuals are now better informed about their performance, and the organisation has been able to gather a wealth of information on leadership behaviours, which is helping with development planning and our understanding of business culture.

Janis Chng, Senior Business Psychologist at ETS and author of the report, adds:

Traditionally performance appraisals have focussed only on what has been achieved by an individual when reviewing a list of quantifiable objectives. This does not capture how employees reach targets and as companies increasingly focus on business relationships and long term profitability, such measurement becomes essential.

The report also includes a practical guide for companies, outlining tips based on best practice regarding how to successfully introduce 360-degree feedback as part of the performance management process.
